Dog-Blog........... Dog Sizes
Pedigree dog breeds are usually grouped into three general categories:- Small, Medium. Large.
Often there is an overlap and some bigger "small" dogs are sometimes defined as medium and likewise some smaller "large" dogs are classified as medium.
Some other groupings are sometimes seen, Toy dogs, Teacup dogs (both very small dogs) and Giant dogs

For many people, the average adult size of a dog breed can be a very important factor when choosing their pet.
The size of a breed can often provide a useful guide, as certain characteristics are often shared by groups of dog sizes.
Many big dog breeds will usually eat more, need more exercise and can be prone to certain health problems.
Medium size dogs will often be bred from working breeds.
Small sized dogs can be bundles of energy often with barking tendencies

Dog Sizes (With over 200 breeds to select from, the adult size of a dog breed is, for many people, a very important factor when choosing to get a dog.)

Basically there are three main size groups:-

  • Small dogs are usually less than 25 lbs
  • Medium dogs are usually 25 to 60 lbs.
  • Large dogs are usually over 60 lbs.

(Sometimes we see sub-groups within these; Toy dogs & Teacup dogs are both within the Small dog group
and Giant dogs in the Large group)

Small Sized Dog Breeds:-
Dogs weighing under 25 pounds are small dogs and most small dogs are in the Toy Dog sub-category: (Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pugs, and Yorkshire Terriers), but there are larger breeds like Beagles and Corgis that will qualify as small dogs.
Small dogs may be small in stature but they generally are large in personality

Medium Sized Dog Breeds:-
Medium size dog breeds sit nicely in between the other size groupings they are good for people who don't want a dog that's too big and may be difficult to care for, but also don't want a dog that's can be too tiny and fragile to play with.
Medium dogs are often fun to play with and their weight and size range range makes them ideal pets for all family members.

Large Sized Dog Breeds :-
Large-sized dogs are classified as dog breeds weighing 60lbs (27kgs.) or more . Some, like Bull Mastiffs, are very large dogs and can weigh over 250lbs (115kgs.).
Sometimes very large dogs are referred to as "Giant Breeds" these may include Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds etc.
It is important to note that large does not necessarily equal fierce, Bull Mastiffs for example, are very child friendly
